Near the end of the spectacular, three hour drive from Calgary to Radium Hot Springs, the highway meanders along a spirited mountain stream and cuts through a narrow, cliff-walled canyon. When you drive through and get to the other side, to the quaint and charming townsite, something changes. You’re in the Columbia Valley. The grass is green. Flagsticks are flickering. You’re on “the warm side of the Rockies.” Bring your sticks.
To say that golf is a go-to sport in the Columbia Valley hardly does it justice. This is, without a doubt, one of the premier golf destinations in the country. The Columbia Valley Golf Trail boasts 11 terrific courses. And every course has a character all its own. Here’s a quick rundown.
The Point Course – Jaw-dropping views of the Purcells and a host of holes that tumble and roll through arid hills are signature elements of the world-class golf experience at Copper Point.
The Ridge Course – Professionally-designed and beautifully-shaped, the sporty Ridge Course at Copper Point (it plays to a par of 66) serves up an unforgettable 3-hour golf experience.
The Springs Course – With majestic mountain views and a riveting finishing run high above the Columbia Valley Wetlands, the Radium Springs Course – a bold Les Furber design – could easily be a poster child for what golf in this region is all about.
The Radium Course – Short and sporty (but still an adequate challenge for a low-handicap player), the Resort Course in Radium Hot Springs is peppered with eye-popping holes that plunge down the mountainside.
Riverside Course – Meandering along the Columbia River, the aptly named Fairmont Riverside offers and fun, yet challenging experience that is ideal for any skill level
Mountainside Course – Laid overtop gently rolling terrain – with wonderful views of Columbia Lake and snow-crusted Purcell peaks – Fairmont Mountainside is a challenging mountain course that has stood the test of time.
Creekside Course – A family-friendly par-3 course – professionally-designed with beautiful undulating greens – Fairmont Creekside is ideal for beginners or anyone who wants to dial in that all-important short game.
Eagle Ranch Resort – Massive ravines, hoodoos, white-silica bunkers, and gorgeous mountain views are highlights of the spectacular Eagle Ranch Course. The handful of holes that careen atop the bluff are sublime!
Coy’s Par 3 – A legend in its own time, the short-and-sweet – and very unique! – par-3 golf course at Coy’s epitomizes what the fun and laid-back golf genre is all about.
Windermere Valley Golf Course – A local’s favourite for decades, this super-popular, executive-length course in tucked-away Windermere is about as approachable and user-friendly as golf gets.
Spur Valley Golf Resort – Located in a peaceful valley just fifteen minutes north of Radium Hot Springs, the golf and RV oasis of Spur Valley is a scenic and challenging 9-holer with plenty of one-of-a-kind charms.
